Former professional ice hockey player Konstantin Koltsov, who was the partner of tennis player Aryna Sabalenka, has died by apparent suicide at the age of 42, according to the Miami-Dade Police Department. Koltsov represented Belarus at the Winter Olympics in 2002 and 2010 and played three seasons in the NHL with the Pittsburgh Penguins from 2003 to 2006.

Koltsov was working as a coach for Salavat Yulaev and had previously won the team's first Russian championship title in 2008. He was highly respected and loved by players, colleagues, and fans.

The Miami-Dade Police Department responded to a dispatch at the St. Regis Bal Harbour Resort, where Koltsov was found. The police department's Homicide Bureau is investigating the apparent suicide, and no foul play is suspected. Salavat Yulaev released a statement expressing deep sorrow and honoring Koltsov's contributions to the club.

The Pittsburgh Penguins offered their deepest condolences to Koltsov's family and friends. Koltsov often traveled with Sabalenka to tennis tournaments and was described by her as the best man in the world who made her happy every day. Sabalenka is currently ranked as the world No. 2 in women's tennis.

Sabalenka recently competed in the Indian Wells tournament and is scheduled to participate in the upcoming Miami Open. CNN has reached out to Sabalenka's representative for comment.
