Real Filming Locations
While the fictional town of Chimney Rock in upstate New York serves as the setting for Wake Up Dead Man in the Knives Out series, most of the filming actually took place in the UK. The interiors were shot at Leavesden Studios in Watford, and exteriors were filmed at the Church of the Holy Innocents in High Beach, Epping Forest. Additionally, exterior scenes set in the town were shot in Cold Spring, New York.
Choosing the Church of the Holy Innocents
Production Designer Rick Heinrichs revealed that the Church of the Holy Innocents was carefully selected as the main filming location for the movie. While exploring various UK churches, they found that many appeared too old for a US setting. However, the charm and storybook-like quality of the Holy Innocents Church in Epping Forest stood out, aligning with director Rian Johnson's vision for the film.
Interior Filming Challenges
Despite the picturesque exterior of the Holy Innocents Church, the decision was made to film interior scenes on studio sets rather than on location. Heinrichs noted that the church's small size and lack of scripted interior features made it unsuitable for the production's needs. Additionally, the potential destruction of interior elements during filming would have been difficult to manage in a real church setting.
Vicar's Involvement in Filming
Reverend Jane Yeadon, the vicar of the Church of the Holy Innocents, was thrilled that her church was chosen as a filming location for Wake Up Dead Man. She even had a clause in the contract that required her presence on set during filming. This was not only for security reasons but also because of her admiration for the previous films in the Knives Out series. During filming, Yeadon had some amusing encounters, including being mistaken for an extra by actress Mila Kunis.
