Success of Greyhound on Apple TV
One of the best naval World War II movies of the decade, Greyhound starring Tom Hanks, initially didn't have much success but has now become a sleeper hit on streaming. Currently, it is the ninth most popular film on Apple TV worldwide, surpassing other popular titles. After its theatrical release was canceled due to the COVID-19 pandemic, Sony Pictures sold the distribution rights to Apple TV, where it premiered on July 10, 2020. Despite lacking a theatrical release, the film received positive reviews from critics and audiences alike, earning an Oscar nomination for Best Sound.
What Is Greyhound About?
Based on C.S. Forester's novel The Good Shepherd, Greyhound follows U.S. Navy Cmdr. Ernest Krause, played by Tom Hanks, leading an Allied convoy across the Atlantic during World War II. Pursued by German U-boats, Krause finds himself in the epic Battle of the Atlantic, the longest and most complex naval battle in history. Directed by Aaron Schneider, the film also features Stephen Graham, Rob Morgan, Elisabeth Shue, and other talented actors. The realistic depiction of naval combat and the importance of logistics under pressure have garnered praise from both critics and audiences.
Sequel and Future Plans
Filming took place aboard USS Kidd in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, in March 2018, with actors receiving training on set. A sequel to Greyhound was confirmed in 2022 after several years in development, with filming scheduled to begin in early January 2026. The success of the first film has paved the way for further exploration of the characters and events portrayed in Greyhound. Fans of the original movie can look forward to more thrilling naval warfare and compelling storytelling in the upcoming sequel.
